Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

Where do sayings come from? It's a mystery sometimes. "She's the cat's pajamas!" "You're the apple of my eye." "It came straight from the horse's mouth!"

Or what about strange traditions? . . .

Why do we throw tailgate parties before sporting events?

Why do children dress up in costumes and walk door-to-door saying "Trick-or-Treat" on Halloween?

Why do presidents give turkeys pardons?

Why do we have a groundhog tell us if we're going to have 6 more weeks of winter or not?

Sometimes we don't even give them a second thought. Well we wanted to give a second thought to an old wedding tradition that the bride should wear "something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue."

Whether or not you followed this or plan on following this, chances are that you've heard this cute little ditty. The full saying has English roots and was originally, "Something Olde, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, a Silver Sixpence in Her Shoe." It first appeared in print in 1883 and became a widespread tradition in England by 1898.

Something Old is a symbol for her family, her past and tradition. Something New is a symbol for her new life ahead of her. Something Borrowed is traditionally borrowed from another happy bride, and symbolizes borrowed happiness. Something Blue is a symbol for fidelity, purity, and love. For Christian brides, it is also a symbol of the Virgin Mary.

Many women still like to have fun and be creative with their four somethings that are old, new, borrowed, and blue. It's a great way to get to incorporate a piece of jewelry that your mother or grandmother may have worn on her wedding day and yet still have new attire to call your own.
